Bacillus algicola Ivanova et al. 2004.
Description is based upon a single isolate.
Gram-positive filamentous cells with “cross-like” branching , 0.5-0.9 / 1.8-5.0 µm.
Subterminal/terminal, ellipsoidal endospores (0.5-0.7/0.7-1.0 µm) in unswollen
sporangia. Motile.
Colonies are slightly yellowish, semitransparent and creamy. Grow aerobically.
Alkalitolerant organism,  growth is observed at pH 7.0-10; optimal growth is observed
at pH 9. Growth occurs at 10-45 ºC, optimum temperature is 30 ºC. No requirement of  
NaCl, allantoin or urate for growth (0-3% NaCl tolerance).
Bacteria was isolated from degraded thallus of brown alga Fucus evanescens , Kraternaya Bight, Pacific Ocean.

Positive results for hydrolysis of urea , gelatin and starch. Weak reaction for catalase and nitrate reduction.
