Basonym: Bacillus amylolyticus (ex Choukevitch 1911) Nakamura 1984.
This species represents DNA hybridization group 11 of Bacillus circulans sensu lato.
Gram-positive, 0.5–1.0 x 3.0–5.0 μm rods, motile by peritrichous flagella. Produce
terminal / subterminal, ellipsoidal spores in swollen sporangia.
Colonies are grayish-white, translucent, smooth and flat. Aerobic, facultatively
anaerobic. Grow on nutrient agar. Growth temperature 10-15 to 40 ºC, optimum 28-37
ºC. Grow at 4.5-9.0 pH (optimum 7.0) and in 2% NaCl, but not in 5% and 7% NaCl
media.
Isolated from soil. Susceptible to 0.001% lysozyme.

production from: L-arabinose, cellobiose, fructose, galactose, D-glucose, glycerol, inositol, inulin, D-mannitol, maltose, mannose,
melibiose, ribose, salicin, starch, sucrose, trehalose and D-xylose.
Negative results for citrate utilization, H2S production, hydrolysis of hippurate, lecithinase, tyrosine degradation, indole production,
dihydroxyacetone, degradation of tyrosine, deamination of phenylalanine, urease, Voges-Proskauer test, acid production from:
adonitol, lactose, raffinose, rhamnose, sorbitol and sorbose.
