Phylum Bacillota (Firmicutes), Class Bacilli, Order Caryophanales, Family Bacillaceae, Genus Bacillus, Bacillus barbaricus Taubel,
Kampfer, Buczolits, Lubitz and Busse 2003.
Glaeser et al. proposed the transfer of Bacillus arsenicus, Bacillus barbaricus, Bacillus
macauensis, Bacillus nanhaiensis, Bacillus rigui, Bacillus solisalsi and Bacillus gelatini
in the genus Fictibacillus.
Gram-positive rods, 0.5 x 4-5 µm, nonmotile. Borne subterminally, ellipsoidal
endospores in swollen sporangia.
Colonies are brownish, circular, opaque, flat, 3-7 mm. in diameter on peptone - yeast
extract - succinate (PYES) agar. Growth is observed at pH 6 - 9.5; temperature range
18-42 ºC (optimum 30-37 ºC). NaCl is not required for growth, 2% NaCl tolerance.
Allantoin or urate are not required. Alkalitolerant. Facultatively anaerobic.
Isolated from experimental wall painting exposed in the Virgilkapella, Vienna, Austria. No growth in the presence of lysozyme.

adonitol, amygdalin, D-arabinose, D- or L-arabitol, arbutin, cellobiose, dulcitol, erythritol, D- or L-fucose, beta-gentibiose, gluconate,
glycerol, meso-inositol, inulin, 2-ketogluconate, lyxose, melezitose, melibiose, D-mannitol, methyl beta-xyloside, raffinose, rhamnose,
salicin, sorbitol, sorbose, xylitol, D- and L-xylose.
Variable results for acidification of fructose, galactose, lactose and sucrose.
