Phylum Bacillota (Firmicutes), Class Bacilli, Order Caryophanales, Family Bacillaceae, Genus Caldibacillus, Caldibacillus debilis
(Banat et al. 2004) Coorevits et al. 2012, type species of the genus.
Synonyms: Geobacillus debilis Banat et al. 2004.
Gram-negative rods, 0.5-1.0 x 1.0-14.0 µm, occuring singly, in pairs or chains. Motile.
Spores are sparsely produced, terminally, not swelling the sporangium.
Colonies flat, cream-coloured with smooth margins. Growth occurs at 50-70 ºC, with
an optimum above 60 ºC. Can grow at pH 9, not at pH 5. No growth in 1% or 5% NaCl.
Obligate aerobe.
Isolated from 50 mm undisturbed subsurface soil samples from Northern Ireland.
Unknown (none).
