Gram-positive, round-ended rods, 0.5 x 2.0 µm, occurring singly or in pairs, rarely in
short chains or filaments. Motile by peritrichous flagella. The endospores are mainly
ellipsoidal and subterminally positioned in non-swollen sporangia. No parasporal
crystals. No poly-beta-hydroxybutyrate (PHB) accumulation.
Colonies on TSA are cream-coloured, slightly irregular in shape and bulge upward.
When the medium is supplemented with salt the colonies become mucous. In liquid
medium a thin film is formed at the surface whilst the rest of the medium is uniformly
cloudy. Grows at 15-45 ºC (optimum at 32 ºC), at pH 5-10 (optimum pH 7.2) and in
0-12% (w/v) NaCl (optimum 0.5% NaCl). Haemolysis is produced. Grows in the
presence of lysozyme (0.001%) and in media without yeast extract. No growth on
MacConkey agar. Aerobic.
Isolated from brackish sediments taken from the mouth of the river Velez in the province of Malaga in southern Spain.
Susceptible to amoxicillin, amoxicillin+clavulanic acid, cephalothin, chloramphenicol, doxycycline, erythromycin, kanamycin, nalidixic
acid, nitrofurantoin, norfloxacin, novobiocin, rifampicin, trimethoprim+sulfametoxazol and vancomycin. Variable for ceftazidime and
colistin. Resistant to aztreonan.

Variable results for arginine dihydrolase, citrate utilization, dihydroxyacetone production, lysine decarboxylase, ornithine
