Phylum Bacillota (Firmicutes), Class Bacilli, Order Caryophanales, Family Caryophanaceae, Genus Jeotgalibacillus, Jeotgalibacillus
alimentarius Yoon et al. 2001; type species of the genus.
Species description is based upon a single isolate.
Gram-variable rods of 1.0-1.2 x 2.0-4.0 µm or longer. Motile by peritrichous flagella.
Produce round endospores, located subterminally or terminally in swollen sporangia.
Colonies are smooth, glistening, irregular, flat to raised and orange-yellow in colour
on marine agar. Growth occurs at 10 and 45 ºC, but not at 4 or 50 ºC. Optimal growth
temperature is 30-35 °C. Optimal pH for growth is pH 7.0-8.0; growth is observed at
pH 6.0. Grows in the presence of 19% NaCl (weakly in 20% NaCl). Facultatively
anaerobic.
Isolated from jeotgal, a traditional Korean fermented seafood. No resistance to 100 U/ml lysozyme.
