Gram-variable (Gram-positive, but becoming Gram-negative within 24 hours of culture
at 30 ºC), motile, pleomorphic rods, 0.4-0.8 x 3.0-6.0 µm. Produce ellipsoidal,
subterminal / terminal endospores  that may swell the sporangia slightly .
Colonies are 1-5 mm in diameter, creamy-gray, raised, translucent, glossy, moist,
with irregular margins and surfaces. Facultatively anaerobic. Grow poor in nutrient
agar and trypticase soy agar without added salts. Growth pH 6-8 (optimum 7). Growth
temperature 20-45 ºC (optimum 30 ºC). NaCl, allantoin or urate are not required.
Isolated from geothermal soil taken from an active fumarole on Lucifer Hill, a volcano on Candlemas Island, South Sandwich
archipelago, maritime Antarctica.
