Phylum Bacillota (Firmicutes), Class Bacilli, Order Caryophanales, Family Bacillaceae, Genus Bacillus, Bacillus methanolicus
Arfman, Dijkhuizen, Kirchhof, Ludwig, Schleifer, Bulygina, Chumakov, Govorhukina, Trotsenko, White & Sharp 1992.
Gram-positive rods, nonmotile. Filamentous cells may be seen in older cultures.
Produce centrally to subterminally, ellipsoidal endospores in swollen sporangia.
Colonies have rough surfaces and crenated, undulating margins on TSA. Aerobic.
Grow at pH 7-10, not at pH 6. Thermotolerant; temperature range 35-60 ºC (optimum
55 ºC). NaCl, allantoin or urate are not required for growth. Variable growth in 2%
NaCl medium, and negative in 5% NaCl.
Isolated from soil, aerobic and thermophilic wastewater treatment systems and volcanic hot springs.
Not determined.
