pasteurii Yoon et al.2001 (Miquel 1889).
Historical synonyms: Bacillus pasteurii (Miquel) Chester 1898, Urobacillus pasteurii Miquel 1889, Bacillus probates Vihoever 1913.
Cells' size is 1.3-4.0 x 0.5-1.2 µm. Gram-positive but easily decolorized, motile.
Spores are spherical or slightly oval, 0.8-1.3 µm in diameter, subterminal or terminal,
usually swelling the sporangium.
Colonies on agar not distinctive; circular or glossy; size and opacity vary on different
media. Liquid media is turbid; slimy deposit. Maximum temperature, 30-45 ºC;
minimum temperature, 5-15 ºC. Aerobic. Alkaline media (optimum pH 9) containing
NH3 (optimum 1% NH4Cl) are required. A defined medium contains casein hydrolysate
at pH 9, ammonia, thiamine, biotin and nicotinic acid.
Isolated from soil, water, sewage and incrustations on urinals.

Positive results for Voges-Proskauer test.
Negative results for indole production, starch hydrolysis, acid production from: arabinose, glucose (weak), mannitol and xylose.
Variable results for decomposition of casein, resistance to lysozyme, gelatin liquefaction and reduction of nitrate to nitrite.
