It is phenotypically close to
Bacillus alcalophilus but phylogenetically distinct.
Rod shaped, 0.5-0.6 x 2.0-4.0 µm, producing paracentral / subterminal, ellipsoidal
endospores (0.5-0.7 x 0.8-1.3 µm) in swollen sporangia.
Colonies are white with undulate margins. Grow aerobically (anaerobic growth was
not tested). Alkaliphilic. Growth temperature 10-40 ºC (optimum 30 ºC); pH 8-10
(optimum pH 10). Can grow in 5-10% NaCl. NaCl, alantoin or urate are not required
for growth.
Isolated from soil.

Positive results for caseinase, gelatinase and starch hydrolysis.

Negative results for deamination of phenylalanine, hydrolysis of hippurate, nitrate reduction, hydrolysis of Tween 20
and 80. No
growth in Voges-Proskauer test and in acid production tests from: L-arabinose, D-glucose, D-mannitol, D-mannose, methyl
beta-xyloside, glycogen, salicin, starch and D-xylose.

Variable results for hydrolysis of Tween 40 and 60.
