Species description is based on a single isolate.
Gram-positive rods with rounded ends, 1.0 x 3.0-4.0 µm.  Non-motile. Produce central
ellipsoidal endospores.
Colonies after 48h of incubation on TSA are circular, convex and beige with a shiny
appearance, 2-3 mm in diameter. Grows at 28 ºC on R2A, NB, TSA, malt agar, PYE,
CASO agar, K7 agar, M65 agar, DEV agar, NA, LB agar and Columbia agar with
sheep blood. No growth on MA and MacConkey agar. Growth occurs at 10-36 ºC
(optimally at 28-30 ºC,) at pH 5.5-9.5 (optimally at pH 7-8) and at  0-3% (w/v) NaCl
(optimally at 0-1% NaCl). Aerobic.
Isolated from the root surface of maize (Zea mays) in Dunbar, Nebraska, USA.

Positive results for acid and alkaline phosphatase, catalase, esterase (C4), esterase lipase (C8), esculin hydrolysis, leucine
arylamidase, nitrate reduction, naphthol-AS-BI-phosphohydrolase, oxidase, Voges-Proskauer test, acid production from:
N-acetylglucosamine, cellobiose, D-fructose, D-glucose (negative in API 20 NE), glycogen, maltose and starch.
Can assimilate (APi 20NE): D-glucose, N-acetylglucosamine, maltose and malic acid.
Can utilize as sole carbon source: N-acetyl-D-glucosamine, L-arabinose (weak), cellobiose, D-fructose, glucose, maltose, acetate,
propionate, fumarate, glutarate, DL-malate, lactate, putrescine and pyruvate.

Negative results for arginine dihydrolase, alpha-chymotrypsin, alpha-fucosidase, gelatin hydrolysis, alpha- and beta-galactosidase,  
alpha- and beta-glucosidase, beta-glucuronidase, H
2S production, indole production, lipase (C14), alpha-mannosidase,
N-acetyl-beta-glucosaminidase, lysine decarboxylase, ornithine decarboxylase, starch hydrolysis, trypsin, alpha-chymotrypsin,
tryptophan deaminase, urease, valine arylamidase, acid production from: D-adonitol, arbutin, D- and L-arabinose, D- and L-arabitol,
dulcitol, erythritol, D- and L-fucose, D-galactose, gentiobiose, gluconate, 2- and 5-ketogluconate, inositol, inulin, lactose, D-lyxose,
D-mannose, D-mannitol, melezitose, melibiose, methyl alpha-D-mannopyranoside, raffinose, L-rhamnose, D-ribose, salicin,
D-sorbitol, L-sorbose, sucrose, D-tagatose, trehalose, methyl beta-D-xylopyranoside, xylitol, D- and L-xylose.
No assimilation of: potassium gluconate, L-arabinose, D-mannose, D-mannitol, capric acid, adipic acid, trisodium citrate and
phenylacetic acid.
No utilization of: arbutin, D-galactose, D-gluconate, i-inositol, D-mannose, melibiose, ribose, trehalose, D-maltitol salicin, sucrose,
d-sorbitol, D-xylose, cis-aconitate, trans-aconitate, adipate, D-adonitol, 4-aminobutyrate, azelate, citrate, itaconate, mesaconate,
2-oxoglutarate and L-rhamnose.
