Phylum Bacillota (Firmicutes), Class Bacilli, Order Caryophanales, Family Bacillaceae, Genus Bacillus, Bacillus salacetis Daroonpunt
et al. 2019.
Species description is based on a single isolate.
Gram-positive rods, 0.6-1.0 x 1.4-2.9 µm. Motile by peritrichous flagella. Produce
central ellipsoidal endospores in unswollen sporangia.
Colonies are slightly irregular, pale yellow in colour (1-2 mm in diameter) after growth
on modified JCM medium no. 377 agar at 37 ºC for 2 days. Growth occurs at 20-40 ºC
(optimally at 37 ºC,) at pH 6-9 (optimally at pH 7) and at 0-15% (w/v) NaCl (optimally
at 1-3% NaCl). Strictly aerobic.
Isolated from shrimp paste collected from Samut Sakhon province, Thailand.
Sensitive to: amikacin, amoxycilin, ampicillin, cefepime, ceftriaxone, cefotaxime, cefoxitine, chloramphenicol, clindamycin, ertapenem,
erythromycin, gentamicin, imipenem, kanamycin, levofloxacin, netilmicin, nitrofurantoin, novobiocin, polymyxin B, rifampicin,
sulfomethoxazole/trimetroprim, piperacillin/tazobactam, tetracycline and vancomycin.

Positive results for alkaline phosphatase, alpha-chymotrypsin, cystine arylamidase, catalase, esterase (C4), esterase lipase (C8),
gelatinase (negative in API 20NE), beta-galactosidase (sometimes weak), alpha- and beta-glucosidase,
naphthol-AS-Bl-phosphohydrolase, leucine arylamidase, oxidase, starch hydrolysis, trypsin (weak), urease, valine arylamidase, acid
production from: aesculin, arbutin, cellobiose, D-glucose, lactose, maltose, salicin, starch (weak) and D-trehalose.
Can utilize (API 20NE): L-arabinose (weakly), apidic acid, capric acid, D-glucose, N-acetyl-glucosamine, malic acid, maltose,
D-mannitol, D-mannose, phenylacetic acid, potassium gluconate and trisodium citrate.
Negative results for acid phosphatase, arginine dihydrolase, citrate utilization, alpha-fucosidase, alpha-galactosidase,
beta-glucuronidase, indole production, lipase (C14), N-acetyl-beta-glucosaminidase, alpha-mannosidase, nitrate reduction,
protease, hydrolysis of Tween 80, acid production from: N-acetylglucosamine, amygdalin, D-adonitol, D- and L-arabinose, D- and
L-arabitol, arbutin, dulcitol, erythritol, D-fructose, D- and L-fucose, D-galactose, gentiobiose, glycerol, glycogen, inositol, inulin,
gluconate, 2- and 5-ketogluconate, D-lyxose, D-mannitol, D-mannose, melezitose, melibiose, methyl alpha-D-glucopyranoside,
