Phylum Bacillota (Firmicutes), Class Bacilli, Order Caryophanales, Family Bacillaceae, Genus Bacillus, Bacillus smithii Nakamura,
Blumenstock & Claus 1988.
Gram-positive rods, motile by peritrichous flagellation, 0.8-1.0 x 5.0-6.0 µm, producing
terminal/subterminal, ellipsoidal to cylindrical endospores (0.6-0.8 x 1.3-1.5 µm) in
unswollen sporangia.
Colonies are thin, smooth, translucent, unpigmented, and about 2 mm in diameter.
Good growth occurs in nutrient broth with 15% NaCl added.
Aerobic, facultatively anaerobic. Facultatively thermophilic. Growth temperature 25-65
ºC, pH 6-7. Grow in 2-3% NaCl, no growth in 5-10% NaCl. NaCl, alantoin or urate are
not required for growth.
Isolated from evaporated milk, canned foods, cheese, and sugar beet juice from extraction installations.
No growth in the presence of lysozyme.
Undetermined.
