Phylum Bacillota (Firmicutes), Class Bacilli, Order Caryophanales, Family Paenibacillaceae, Genus Paenibacillus, Paenibacillus
timonensis Roux and Raoult 2004.
Description is based on a single isolate.
Gram-positive, motile (peritrichous flagella) rods, 0.5 x 2.0 μm. Produce terminal,
ellipsoidal spore in swollen sporangium.
Grows on routine media. Colonies are greysh, shiny, translucent and 1 mm in
diameter after 24 hours at 30 ºC. Nonhemolytic. Aerobic and anaerobic growth.
Optimum growth temperature 30-37 ºC. Can grow at 50 ºC. Grow in 2%, but not in 5 or
7% NaCl. Range of pH: 5-9.5.
The type strain was isolated from human blood culture sample.
Sensitive to amoxicillin, gentamicin, doxycycline, and vancomycin. Resistant to erythromycin and trimethoprim+sulfamethoxazole.
The type strain was isolated from blood culture samples of a apyretic 75-year-old woman suffering from chronic interstitial
nephropathy with loose cough and sputum.

Negative results for acid and alkaline phosphatase, caseinase, citrate utilization, gelatinase, indole production, oxidase, urease,
Voges-Proskauer test, acid production from: adonitol, D-arabinose, arabitol, dulcitol, erythritol, D- or L-fucose, glycerol, inulin, 2- or
5-ketogluconate, lyxose, D-mannitol, methyl-alpha-D-mannoside, melezitose, raffinose, rhamnose, ribose, sorbitol, sorbose,
sucrose, tagatose, turanose, xylitol, L-xylose and methyl-beta-D-xyloside.
Variable acid production from: inositol, mannose and D-xylose.
