Synonym:
Bacillus vedderi Agnew et al. 1996. Description of a single isolate.
Gram-positive, motile rods. Produce ellipsoidal / spherical, terminal spores in swollen
sporangia.
Colonies are white, flat and circular, and 1.5 mm in diameter after 2 days on alkaline
oxalate medium at 37 ºC. Anaerobic. Growth stimulated by presence of vitamins (in
yeast extract). Alkaliphilic, grow at pH 8.9-10.5.
Grows at temperature 40 ºC (optimum) to 50 ºC (variable), and in 0-7.5% NaCl media.
Alantoin or urate are not required for growth.
Isolated from red mud bauxite-processing waste, using alkaline oxalate enrichment.

Positive results for hydrolysis of gelatin (weak), oxidase, catalase and hydrolysis of xylan.

Negative results for hydrolysis of casein,  hydrolysis of starch, Voges-Proskauer test, acid production from: L-arabinose , D-glucose,
D-mannitol, D-mannose, methyl beta-xyloside, glycogen, salicin, starch and D-xylose.
