Chitinimonas taiwanensis Chang et al. 2004, type species of the genus.

Species description is based on a single isolate.
Gram-negative slightly curved rods. Motile by a single polar flagellum.
Colonies are white. Optimum conditions for growth are between 25 and 37 ºC (range
4-42 ºC), 0 and 1% NaCl and pH 6 to 8 (range 4-10). Facultative anaerobe. Grows on
Nutrient agar and Tryptone Soya Agar (Oxoid CM0131).
Isolated from surface water of a freshwater pond for shrimp (Macrobrachium rosenbergii) culture at Ping-Tung (Southern Taiwan).

Description is based mostly on API ID32 GN, API 20NE, and API ZYM results.

Positive results for acid and alkaline phosphatase, chitin hydrolysis, esculin hydrolysis, esterase (C4),esterase lipase (C8),  lipase
(C14), alpha- and beta-galactosidase, nitrate reduction, naphthol-AS-Bl-phosphoamidase, starch hydrolysis, alpha-chymotrypsin,
trypsin, urease, valine arylamidase, acid production from glucose.
Can assimilate lactic acid, D-sorbitol, D-mannitol, N-acetylglucosamine, D-glucose, D-maltose, glycogen, valeric acid,
3-hydroxybutyric acid and L-proline.

Negative results for arginine dihydrolase, casein hydrolysis, cystine arylamidase,  alpha-fucosidase, beta-glucuronidase, alpha- and
beta-glucosidase, N-acetyl-beta-glucosaminidase, gelatin hydrolysis, H
2S production, indole production, lysine decarboxylase,
alpha-mannosidase and ornithine decarboxylase.
No assimilation of L-serine, L-histidine, D-mannose, malic acid, sucrose, L-arabinose, potassium gluconate, capric acid, adipic acid,
trisodium citrate, phenylacetic acid, L-rhamnose, D-ribose, inositol, itaconic acid, suberic acid, sodium malonate, sodium acetate,
L-alanine, 2- and 5-ketogluconate, 3-hydroxybenzoic acid, salicin, D-melibiose, L-fucose, propionic acid and 4-hydroxybenzoic acid.
