Phylum Pseudomonadota (Proteobacteria), Class Betaproteobacteria, Order Burkholderiales, Family Burkholderiaceae, Genus
Lautropia, Lautropia mirabilis Gerner-Smidt et al. 1995, type species of the genus.
Gram-negative coccoid cells,1-2 to more than 5 μm in diameter (sphaeroblast-like cells). Motile by a tuft of 3-9 flagella. Non-spore-
forming. Capsulated and non-capsulated forms occurs.
Colonies are non-pigmented, 1 to 5 mm in diameter, usually adherent to the
substrate. At least three colony morphologies are seen: (1) flat, dry, circular colonies
predominating in young cultures, becoming (2) larger, wrinkled, crisp and crateriform
on prolonged incubation, and (3) smooth, glistering, raised, round, mucoid colonies.
Grows on most enriched media, especially on chocolate, Levinthal, TGY and Tween
80 agar; grows slower with no haemolysis on horse-blood agar. Growth temperature
range is 30-44 ºC. Facultative, but grows best under aerobic conditions with no
requirement for CO2. Produce polysaccharide on sucrose agar.
Isolated from human dental plaque. Sensitive to penicillin G, ampicillin, piperacillin, cefuroxime, gentamicin and erythromycin.
Undetermined.
