Phylum Pseudomonadota (Proteobacteria), Class Betaproteobacteria, Order Burkholderiales, Family Burkholderiaceae, Genus
Limnobacter,
Limnobacter thiooxidans Spring et al. 2001, type species of the genus.
Gram-negative slightly curved rods with pointed ends, 0.6-1.5 x 1.5-3.7 μm, occuring
singly or in short chains. Motile by a single polar flagellum. Non-spore-forming.
Accumulates polyhydroxybutyrate (PBH). Elemental sulfur is not deposited intra or
extracellularly during growth on media containing thiosulfate.
Colonies on R2A medium reach a diameter of 0.8-1.0 mm and are circular, smooth,
translucent and flat with entire margins. Grows at 4-38 ºC (optimum at 30 ºC) and pH
5.5-10.5 (optimum pH 7.5). No growth at 40 ºC. Aerobe; no anaerobic growth.
Chemolithoheterotrophic growth occurs by oxidizing thiosulfate to sulfate.
Isolated from the littoral sediment of a freshwater lake.
Undetermined.
