Paraburkholderia xenovorans
|
Description is based mostly on API 20NE and API ZYM results.
Positive results for acid and alkaline phosphatase, catalase, esterase C4, ester lipase C8, leucine arylamidase, oxidase,
phosphoamidase and Tween 80 hydrolysis.
Can assimilate D-glucose, DL-norleucine, D-mannose, D-mannitol, N-acetyl-D-glucosamine, D-gluconate, caprate, adipate,
L-malate, citrate, phenylacetate, DL-lactate, DL-lactate with methionine and D-xylose.
Negative results for amylase, arginine dihydrolase, DNase, esculin hydrolysis, alpha-fucosidase, gelatin hydrolysis, alpha- and
beta-galactosidase, beta-glucuronidase, alpha- and beta-glucosidase, N-acetyl-beta-glucosaminidase, H2S production, indole
production, lipase C14, lysine decarboxylase, alpha-mannosidase, ornithine decarboxylase, tryptophanase, trypsin, chymotrypsin and
acid production from glucose.
No assimilation of L-arabinose, maltose, sucrose and trehalose.
Variable results for nitrate reduction, urease, valine arylamidase, cysteine arylamidase and assimilation of L-arginine.

Old synonym: Burkholderia xenovorans Goris et al. 2004.
Gram-negative rods, 0.5 / 1.2 μm. Motile. Non-spore-forming.
Grows on nutrient agar at 28 ºC, but not at 42 ºC. Grows on blood agar at 30 ºC and
on Drigalski agar, while growth on blood agar at 37 ºC is strain-dependent (negative
for the type strain). Hemolysis of horse blood is not observed. No growth is observed
on cetrimide or on 10% (w/v) lactose. No growth in the presence of acetamide or in
the presence of 3.0, 4.5 or 6.0% (w/v) NaCl. Growth in the presence of 0.5 or 1.5%
(w/v) NaCl is strain-dependent (negative for the type strain). Pigment is not produced.
Isolated from from a PCB-contaminated soil collected from a landfill in Moreau, New York.
Susceptible to novobiocin and sulfamethoxazole + trimethoprim. Resistant to ampicillin and rifampicin.
Undetermined.
