Arcobacter, Arcobacter anaerophilus Sasi Jyothsna et al. 2013.
Gram-negative, 0.1-0.3 x 1.0-2.0 μm. Non-motile. Non-spore-forming.
On nitrate agar, anaerobically well grown colonies are pale yellow, circular, smooth
with entire margin. Anaerobic broth culture is pale yellow, gelatinous and sediments
at the bottom. NaCl is not essential for growth, but good growth occurs with 1-3%
(w/v) NaCl; tolerates up to 6% NaCl. Grows optimally at pH 7.0-8.0 (range pH 7-10)
and 30 ºC (range 25-37 ºC). No aerobic or microaerobic growth at 37 ºC. No growth
on blood agar, in the presence of 0.04% triphenyltetrazolium chloride or cefoperazone
64 mg / l. Can grow in 1% glycine. Obligately anaerobic.
Isolated from sediment samples of Gangasagar estuary, West Bengal, India.

Positive results for casein hydrolysis, citrate utilization, H2S production, indoxyl acetate hydrolysis, nitrate reduction and oxidase.
Can utilize (Biolog GN2): L-arabinose, D-arabitol, cellobiose, lactose, D-mannose, melibiose, acetate, inosine and phenylethylamine.
Negative results for acid phosphatase, amylase, catalase, gelatinase, indole production, lipase, urease and glucose fermentation.
