Phylum Pseudomonadota (Proteobacteria), Class Epsilonproteobacteria, Order Campylobacterales, Family Campylobacteraceae,
Genus Campylobacter, Campylobacter hepaticus Van et al. 2016.
Gram-negative, S-shaped, 0.3-0.4 x 1.0-1.2 µm. Motile by a single flagellum at both poles. Cells are coccoid after 12 days of
incubation.
Colonies are wet and cream-coloured; some are convex while others are flat and
spreading. They vary in size and morphology after long incubation times.
Non-haemolytic. Grows at 37 and 42 ºC microaerobically. No growth under aerobic
conditions at 37 ºC, under anaerobic conditions at 37 ºC or under microaerobic
conditions at 25 ºC. Does not require hydrogen to grow. Can grow on nutrient agar
without blood, but most of strains cannot grow on MacConkey agar. Strains grow on
blood agar medium supplemented with 1% glycine, 1% bile and metronidazole (4 mg
/l) and grow weakly on 0.04% 2,3,5-triphenyltetrazolium chloride. All strains are
resistant or show intermediate resistance to nalidixic acid (30 µg) and most of them
are resistant to cephalothin (30 µg) by disc diffusion tests.
Isolated from the liver of chickens with spotty liver disease in Australia.
It is likely to be pathogenic to chickens, but pathogenicity to humans is unknown.

Positive results for catalase, indoxyl acetate hydrolysis and oxidase.
Negative results for H2S production on TSI and urea hydrolysis.
