Gram-negative, slightly curved rods, 0.3-0.5 x 1-3.4 μm. Some cells have a filamentous form up to 7 μm long. Motile by a single polar
flagellum. Non-encapsulated. Non-spore-forming.
Colonies on blood agar incubated in aerobic conditions at 30 ºC for 48 h are 2-4 mm
in diameter, beige to off-white, circular with entire margins, convex, and
non-swarming. Pigments are not produced on blood agar. Grows on blood agar at
room temperature (18-22 ºC), 30 and 37 ºC under both aerobic and microaerobic
conditions, but growth is enhanced when 2% NaCl is added to blood agar. Growth is
weak in anaerobic conditions at 30 ºC and in aerobic conditions at 42 ºC. No
haemolysis on TSA + 5% sheep blood. Under  aerobic conditions grows at 30 ºC on
MacConkey agar and on media containing: 0.1% sodium deoxycholate; 1% oxgall;
0.05% safranin; 0.0005% crystal violet and media with 64 mg cefoperazone / l (but
growth is enhanced when the media are supplemented with 2% NaCl); and 2-4%
(w/v) NaCl. Grows on media containing 0.005% basic fuchsin or 0.001% brilliant
green if they were supplemented with 2% NaCl. No growth occurs on minimal
medium, media containing 1% glycine; 0.04% TTC and on CCDA.
Isolated from shellfish samples (mussels and oysters) in Spain.
