Gram-negative straight rods, 0.43-0.45 x 1.61-1.75 μm. Occasional longer
filamentous cells are observable. Non-motile; no flagella.

Colonies on Columbia agar with 5% sheep blood, after 48 hours in microaerobic
atmosphere at 37 ºC, are non-haemolytic, punctiform (1 mm in diameter), convex,
circular with smooth margins and without any pigments. Grows on blood agar at 37
ºC under microaerobic and anaerobic (weak growth), but not aerobic conditions.
Does not require H2 supplementation to grow. Grows in microaerobic conditions at 37
ºC and 42 ºC but not at 25 ºC. Variable ability to grow on blood agar medium + 1%
glycine. Growth is not observed on blood agar medium supplemented with 2% and
3.5% NaCl. Unable to grow on Macconkey agar, Mueller-Hinton agar or TTC 0.04%.
