Colonies are round, smooth, glossy, convex within 48 h, initially cream and
rapidly turning deep purple starting from the centre of the colony. Violacein production
is somewhat less at 37 ºC and is absent at 43 ºC. Some isolates produce violacein-
deficient colonies at high frequency. Non-fluorescent. Produce violacein and
deoxyviolacein pigments, and eventually, a water-soluble, diffusible brown pigment.
Facultatively anaerobic. Optimum growth temperature is 25-26 ºC (can grow up to 43
ºC). Growth occurs in the presence of 2% (w/v) NaCl (up to 3% NaCl). Grows on King’
s medium B and Luria-Bertani broth.

Gram-negative rods, 0.9-1.8 x 2.0-3.9 μm. Motile by means of a polar flagellum.
Isolated from roots and soils of wild and cultivated cranberry (Vaccinium macrocarpon Ait.), the roots of sheep laurel (Kalmia
angustifolia L.) plants growing within the network of native cranberry vines and from irrigation ponds associated with cranberry
cultivation. in Massachusetts, USA.
Resistant to penicillin and ampicillin at 50 μg/ml.
Undetermined.
