Colonies on sheep blood agar after 24h incubation at 37 ºC, are nonhemolytic, gray, 1
mm in diameter. Growth occurs at 25-42 ºC, optimally at 37 ºC. Can grow in 1-2%
(w/v) NaCl. Can grow on MacConkey agar. Facultatively anaerobic. 5% CO2 does not
enhance growth.

Laribacter, Laribacter hongkongensis Yuen et al. 2002, type species of the genus.
Gram-negative, seagull-shaped or spiral rods, 0.2-0.5 x 1.0-1.6 μm. Nonflagellated
and nonmotile. Spores are not formed.
Isolated from the blood and empyema of a cirrhotic 54-year-old Chinese patient.
Sensitive to ampicillin, cephalothin, cefuroxime, ceftazidime, ceftriaxone, imipenem, azetreonam, erythromycin, clarithromycin,
gentamicin, amikacin, ciprofloxacin, levofloxacin, chloramphenicol, tetracycline, co-trimoxazole, and polymyxin B.
Resistant to vancomycin, clindamycin, metronidazole, and 0/129 vibriostatic agent.
Strain was isolated from sterile body fluids from a patient with local and systemic responses (high fever, leukocytosis and neutrophilia).

mannose, melibiose, raffinose, rhamnose, salicin, sorbitol, sucrose and xylose.
No utilization of: citrate, malonate, N-acetylglucosamine, gluconate and phenylacetate.
