Vogesella alkaliphila
Colonies are blue with a copper metallic sheen - produce indigoidine (pigment
production is enhanced with glutamine). Strictly aerobic. Mesophilic; grows at 25-40
ºC (optimum 30 ºC). Grows at pH 6.5-10.0 (optimum at pH 8.0-8.5). NaCl is not
required for growth (tolerance 0-0.5% NaCl).

Gram-negative rods, 0.5-0.6 x 2.0-4.0 μm. Non-motile. Non-spore-forming. Poly-beta-
hydroxybutyrate granules are accumulated.
Isolated from an alkaline soil (pH 8.8) at Mau, Uttar Pradesh, India.
Susceptible to chloramphenicol, gentamicin, kanamycin, nalidixic acid, streptomycin, vancomycin and tetracycline.

gelatin hydrolysis, alpha- and beta-galactosidase, beta-glucuronidase, beta-glucosidase, alpha-mannosidase, pectin hydrolysis,
starch hydrolysis and urease. Nonfermentative; no acid production from glucose, fructose and pyruvate.
No oxidation of L-arabinose, L-fucose, lactulose, D-mannitol, melibiose, raffinose and D-rhamnose.
