(non-Clostridium sensu stricto), Clostridium celerecrescens Palop, Valles, Pinaga and Flors 1989 emeded Chamkha, Garcia and
Labat 2001.
Gram-positive (decolorize readily in older cultures), straight to slightly curved rods,
0.5-0.8 x 2.0-4.0 µm. Motile by peritrichous flagella. Spores are sphaerical, terminal,
swelling the cell.
Anaerobic. Colonies appear after 10-14 days incubation at 37 ºC and exhibit haloes of
cellulolysis; deep colonies are smooth, circular, translucent, unpigmented, 0.5 mm in
diameter. Grow optimally at 30-37 ºC and pH 7.0. Can grow at 23 ºC.
Isolated from a methanogenic cellulolytic culture inoculated from cow manure.

Cellulolytic. The end products of fermentation of cellulose and cellobiose are ethanol,
acetate, formate, butyrate, iosbutyrate, isovalerate, caproate, lactate, succinate, H2, and CO2. Reduces cinnamic acids. Milk reaction is
positive (curd is produced).
Positive results for gelatin hydrolysis, indole production, substrate utilized and/or acid produced from: adonitol, arabinose, cellobiose,
cellulose, esculin, fructose, galactose, glucose, lactose (weak), maltose, (weak), mannitol, mannose, melezitose (weak), melibiose
(weak), raffinose, rhamnose, ribose, sorbose (weak), sucrose (weak), trehalose & xylose.
Negative results for casein hydrolysis, catalase, lecithinase, lipase, nitrate reduction, urease, Voges-Proskauer test, substrate utilized
and/or acid produced from: dulcitol, erythritol, glycerol, inulin, salicin, sorbitol & starch.
