Phylum Bacillota (Firmicutes), Class Clostridia, Order Eubacteriales, Family Clostridiaceae, Genus Clostridium, Cluster I
(Clostridium sensu stricto), Clostridium disporicum Horn 1987.
Gram-positive rods, 1.5 x 2.5-10 µm. Nonmotile. Spores are oval, subterminal; some
cells form two spores.
Obligate anaerobe. Alpha-hemolytic colonies. Fermentable carbohydrates are
required for growth. Ferments glucose to acetic and lactic acid. Growth temperature
22-44 ºC, optimum 25-26 ºC.
Isolated from a slurry of rat cecal contents.

Positive results for esculin hydrolysis, starch hydrolysis, substrate utilized and/or acid
produced from: cellobiose, dulcitol, esculin, fructose, galactose, glucose, lactose,
maltose, mannitol, mannose, melibiose, raffinose, ribose, salicin, starch, sucrose,
trehalose & xylose.
Negative results for catalase, H2 production, gelatin hydrolysis, indole production, lecithinase, lipase, substrate utilized and/or acid
produced from: arabinose, inositol, melezitose, rhamnose & sorbitol.
