Basonym: Clostridium lentocellum Murray, Hofmann, Campbell and Madden 1987. Cluster XIVb (Clostridium non-sensu stricto).
Gram-negative, slightly curved rods, 0.3-0.5 x 2.5-4.0 µm, occurring singly. Motile by
fimbriae located at the cell's end. Spores are spherical, terminal.
Colonies are flat, colorless, transparent, have undulate margins, and measure 7–10
mm in diameter. Cellulolytic. Strict anaerobe. Bile inhibits growth. Hemin, vitamin K,
and rumen fluid stimulate growth.
Optimum temperature for growth is 40 ºC. Grow at 15-46.5 ºC. Optimum pH 7.5-7.7;
range 5.7-9.13.
Ferments cellulose to produce ethanol, acetic acid, hydrogen, and carbon dioxide.
Isolated from an estuarine mud bank of a river that was fed with paper-mill and domestic effluent.
