Phylum Pseudomonadota (Proteobacteria), Class Gammaproteobacteria, Order Enterobacterales, Family Erwiniaceae, Genus Erwinia,
Erwinia papayae Gardan et al. 2004.
Gram-negative rods. Non-encapsulated. Non-spore-forming.
Colonies on YBGA are hyaline and 2-3 mm in size after 3–4 days incubation at 25 ºC.
A non-diffusible blue pigment is produced on King’s medium B. Growth occurs at 28
ºC, but not at 36 or 39 ºC. Facultatively anaerobic.
Isolated from papaya (Carica papaya).
Cause bacterial canker of papaya.

No utilization of esculin, L-serine, maltotriose, D-alanine, maltose, L-aspartate, alpha-L-rhamnose, 2-ketogluconate, D-glucuronate,
L-alanine, melibiose, mannitol, DL-lactate, 10-methyl-beta-galactopyranoside, D-raffinose
Does not assimilate 73 of 100 carbon sources of the Biotype 100 gallery (bioMerieux).
