Old synonyms:
Phytomonas rhapontica Millard 1924, Pectobacterium rhapontici (Millard 1924) Patel and Kulkarni 1951, Erwinia
carotovora biovar rhapontici
(Millard 1924) Dye 1969.
Gram negative, straight bacilli. Motile by peritrichous flagella. Non-spore-forming.
Colonies on YPDA medium,after 48 h at 28 ºC, are 2 mm, circular white, well-domed
and opaque. Produces a weakly diffusible pink pigment (ferrorosamine). Facultatively
anaerobic. Can grow in KCN broth.
Isolated from plants.
Causes a crown rot of rhubarb (Rheum rhaponticum) that extends into the center of the root, pink grain of wheat and internal browning
of hyacinth bulbs. Also associated with lesions caused by other bacteria. Rots potato, onion, and cucumber slices slowly, weakly, and
erratically.
Phytopathogenicity may be due to the release of proferrorosamines.

Positive results for catalase, H2S production, nitrate reduction, acid production from L-arabinose, cellobiose, esculin, fructose,
D-galactose, glucose (without gas),  beta-methyl-glucoside, glycerol, myo-inositol, inulin, lactose, lyxose, maltose, D-mannose,
melezitose, melibiose, raffinose, L-rhamnose, D-ribose, salicin, sorbitol, starch, sucrose, trehalose , and xylitol.

Negative results for arginine dihydrolase, gelatinase,  indole production, pectinase, oxidase, urease, acid production from adonitol,
dextrin, dulcitol, and tagatose.

Variable results for acid production from alpha-methyl-glucoside and D-xylose.
