Phylum Pseudomonadota (Proteobacteria), Class Gammaproteobacteria, Order Enterobacterales, Family Erwiniaceae, Genus Erwinia,
Erwinia tracheiphila (Smith 1895) Bergey et al. 1923 emend. Hauben et al. 1998.
Old synonyms: Bacillus tracheiphilus Smith 1895, Bacterium tracheiphilus, Erwinia amylovora var. tracheiphila.
Gram negative, straight bacilli. Motile by peritrichous flagella. Non-spore-forming.
Facultatively anaerobic. Optimum growth temperature 26-30 ºC. Normally grow at
temperatures below 36 ºC. Grows very poorly on nutrient agar but moderately well
on yeast extract glucose chalk agar (YCC) (10 g glucose, 5 g yeast extract, 30 g
CaCO3, 1.5% agar, 1 l distilled water) or glucose nutrient agar. No growth in 5% NaCl
or in KCN broth.
Isolated from Cucurbita species, Cirullus lanatus, and Cucumis melo. Overwinters in the bodies of cucumber beetles (Diabrotica
vittata Fabr. and D. duodecimpunctata Oliv.).
Causes bacterial wilt of cucurbits (muskmelon, squash, and pumpkin). Watermelon seems to be resistant.
