Gram-negative rods, 0.9 x 1.5-3.0 μm,. Non-capsulated. Motile. Non-spore-forming.
Colonies are beige, round, convex and smooth with entire margins. Optimum growth
temperature is 28- 30 ºC. Facultatively anaerobic.
isolated from a human urethra, sputum and other clinical samples in USA and Canada.
Involved in a septicaemia outbreak in the USA in 1971.

Positive results for catalase, citrate utilization, beta-galactosidase, phenylalanine deaminase (weak), acid production (API 50 CHB/E)
from L-arabinose, D-fructose, D-galactose, maltose, D-mannitol, N-acetylglucosamine, L-rhamnose, D-ribose, trehalose and
D-xylose.
Can utilize sucrose, maltotriose, maltose, D-xylose, L-rhamnose, D-mannitol, meso-tartrate, D-malate, citrate, D-glucose, D-fructose,
D-galactose, trehalose, D-mannose, cellobiose, 1-O-methyl beta-D-glucopyranoside, L-arabinose, glycerol, inositol, D-saccharate,
cis-aconitate, D-glucuronate, D-galacturonate, N-acetylglucosamine, D-gluconate, DL-lactate, L-histidine, L-aspartate, L-glutamate,
L-alanine and L-serine.
Negative results for gelatinase, H2S production, indole production, lysine decarboxylase, ornithine decarboxylase, oxidase, and
urease.
No utilization of melibiose, gentiobiose, L-arabitol, xylitol, dulcitol, D-tagatose, D-sorbitol, adonitol, erythritol, 3-O-methyl
D-glucopyranose, D-tartrate, quinate, betaine, L-sorbose, palatinose, melezitose, maltitol, turanose, tricarballylate, 4-hydroxybenzoate,
gentisate, 3-hydroxybenzoate, benzoate, 3-phenylproprionate, m-coumarate, histamine, caprate, caprylate, glutarate, 5-aminovalerate,
ethanolamine, tryptamine, itaconate, 3-hydroxybutyrate, propionate and L-tyrosine.
Variable results for acid production from dulcitol, cellobiose, glycerol, inositol, lactose, raffinose and D-sorbitol.
Variable utilization of raffinose, lactose (weakly), lactulose, L-fucose, D-arabitol and L-tartrate.
