Gram-negative rods.
Pectolytic bacterium, producing characteristic pits on crystal violet pectate (CVP)
medium. On CVP and nutrient agar, colonies are indistinguishable from other
Pectobacterium species. It grows at 37 ºC. Facultatively anaerobic.
Isolated from potato (Solanum tuberosum L.), in Brasil, USA, Canada, South Africa, Peru,Germany, Japan, Israel and Syria.
Produces blackleg in potato, also causes soft rot in Capsicum annum L., Ornithogalum spp., and Daucus carota subsp.sativus.
Experimental infection: potato stems inoculated with P. brasiliense strains developed typical blackleg symptoms.

P. brasiliense is most similar to Pectobacterium odoriferum, but differes in being
unable to utilize D-arabitol, 3-methylglucose and thymidine-5'-monophosphate.
P. brasiliense is distinguishable from P. carotovorum by its ability to produce reducing substances from sucrose and acid from
alpha-methyl glucoside and maltose.
