Family Helicobacteraceae

Gram negative, curved, spiral, or fusiform rods. Old or air-exposed cells become coccoid. Motile by
multiple flagella. Microaerophilic. Carbohydrates are not fermented or oxidized (except glucose
oxidation by H. pylori). Generally positive for oxidase & catalase (excepting Wolinella). Gelatin,
starch, casein, and tyrosine are not hydrolyzed. Methyl red and Voges–Proskauer are negative.
