Old synonyms: Lactobacillus ingluviei Baele et al. 2003 is an earlier heterotypic synonym of Lactobacillus thermotolerans Niamsup et
al. 2003 (Felis et al. 2006).
Gram-positive (rapidly decolorizing), very short, plump rods, occurring as single cells
or in pairs. Nonmotile. Nonspore-forming.
Colonies are white and smooth or crumbly and dry. Growth is enhanced by anaerobic
conditions and also slightly in the presence of 5% CO2, on Rogosa SL agar
(Becton-Dickinson) and on Slanetz & Bartley agar (Oxoid), after 48 h incubation. Grow
as nonhaemolytic streptococcus-like colonies on Columbia blood agar with
diameters of up to 0.5 mm. Optimum growth temperature is 42 ºC. Can grow at 30 ºC,
but not at 25 ºC. Can grow at 45 ºC (Lactobacillus thermotolerans).
Isolated from crop-sac samples of euthanized pigeons. Strains of “L. thermotolerans” was isolated from chicken faeces.
The habitat is pigeon crop and intestines.

melibiose, rhamnose, salicin, sorbitol, sorbose, starch, tagatose, trehalose, turanose, L-xylose & xylitol.
Variable results for fermentation of: esculin, glucose, gluconate (weak reaction), maltose, mannose, N-acetylglucosamine & raffinose.
