and Rogosa 1970.
Gram-positive rods, 0.6-0.8 x 2.0-4.0 µm, occurring singly, and in short chains.
Can grow at 45 ºC, but not at 15 ºC. Folic acid, vitamin B12, nicotinic acid, and calcium
pantothenate are required for growth.
Isolated from human vaginal discharge and blood clot.

Facultatively heterofermentative. Lactobacillus jensenii is hardly distinguishable from
Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. lactis by simple physiological tests.
Positive results for esterase (C4), esterase lipase (C8), fermentation of fructose, glucose (without gas production), maltose, ribose,
sucrose, turanose, and trehalose.
Negative results for alpha-chymotrypsin, cystine aminopeptidase, alpha- and beta-galactosidase, alpha-glucosidase, leucine
aminopeptidase, N-acetyl-beta-glucosaminidase, naphthol-AS-BI-phosphohydrolase, valine aminopeptidase, fermentation of
adonitol, arabinose, arbutin, gluconate, gentibiose, lactose, melibiose, methyl alpha-D-glucopyranoside, N-acetylglucosamine,
raffinose, rhamnose, sorbitol, sorbose, starch, and xylose.
Variable results for fermentation of amygdalin, cellobiose, esculin, galactose, mannitol, mannose, melezitose, and salicin.
