Gram-positive rods, 0.4-0.6 x 2.0-3.4 µm, occurring singly, in pairs and in short chains.
Non-motile. Non-spore-forming.
Colonies are smooth, white, convex, small, 0.5-1.0 mm in diameter after 3 days of
anaerobic incubation at 25 ºC on MRS agar supplemented with 1.5% ribose. Grows at
6-30 ºC, optimally at 23-25 ºC. Can grow in 5% NaCl. Grows at pH 4.0-7.0. Facultative
anaerobic.
Isolated from aged Cheddar cheese exhibiting late gas defect.

Description is based on API 50 CHL (incubated at 30 ºC) and API ZYM results.
Positive results for cystine arylamidase (weakly), beta-galactosidase, leucine arylamidase, valine arylamidase,
naphthol-AS-BI-phosphohydrolase, fermentation of galactose (weakly) and ribose.
Negative results for acid and alkaline phosphatase, catalase, esterase (C4), esterase lipase (C8), lipase (C14), trypsin,
alpha-chymotrypsin, alpha-fucosidase, alpha-galactosidase, alpha- and beta-glucosidase, beta-glucuronidase,
N-acetyl-beta-glucosaminidase, alpha-mannosidase, fermentation of adonitol, amygdalin, D- and L-arabinose, D- and L-arabitol,
arbutin, cellobiose, dulcitol, erythritol, esculin, L- and D-fucose, D-fructose, glucose, gentiobiose, gluconate, 2- and 5-ketogluconate,
