Phylum Bacillota (Firmicutes), Class Bacilli, Order Lactobacillales, Family Streptococcaceae, Genus Lactococcus,

Gram-positive, ovoid cocci, 1 µm in diameter. Non-motile.
Grow equally well under aerobic, anaerobic and microaerophilic conditions. Growth
occurrs aerobically from 4-30 ºC (type strain 4-25 ºC, optimum 10-25 ºC), with
0-3%NaCl (type strain 0-2.5%, optimum 0-2%) and at pH 5-8.5 (optimum 6-7.5) on
TSA. Facultatively anaerobic.
Isolated from high-oxygen modified atmosphere packaged beef steaks purchased in Freising, Germany.

melibiose, melezitose, maltose, mannose, mannitol, N-acetyl-glucosamine, raffinose, salicin, sucrose, trehalose and turanose.
Negative results for catalase, alpha-galactosidase, oxidase, acid production from: glycogen, ribose, starch and D-tagatose.
Variable results for alpha-chymotrypsin and acid production from methyl-D-glucoside.
