Gram-positive short rods, nonspore-forming, noncapsulated, motile when
cultured below 30 ºC; aerobe and facultative anaerobic, temperature limits
of growth 0 to 45 ºC, acid produced from some carbohydrates (no gas from
glucose), catalase positive, oxidase negative, methyl-red positive,
Voges-Proskauer usually positive, indole and H2S are not produced, urea is
not hydrolysed, organic growth factors are required.

NOTES

According to Rocourt et al. 1992,
Listeria murrayi Welshimer and Meredith
1971 is a later heterotypic synonym of
Listeria grayi Errebo Larsen and Seeliger
1966.

Rocourt et al. 1987 moved Listeria
denitrificans Prevot 1961 to genus
Jonesia as Jonesia denitrificans .
