globiformis (Conn 1928) Conn and Dimmick 1947, type species of the genus.
Basonym: Bacterium globiforme Conn 1928.
Gram-negative, short rods 0.6-0.5 x 1.0-1.5 μm in 24-hour agar slant cultures, but
Gram-positive cocci 0.8-1.2 μm in diameter, occuring in pairs and tetrads after the
cultures are 3 to 4 days old. Branching forms with similar cocci and also large
spherical bodies (1 to 2 μm) appear in liquid media. Nonmotile. Spore not formed.
Colonies on nutrient agar are circular, smooth, entire, raised, glistening, cream / not
pigmented. Nutrient broth: turbid and sediment. Growth occurs in a suitable mineral
salts medium with an ammonium salt or nitrate as sole nitrogen source (with biotin if
required) and with glucose as carbon and energy source. Grows in 0-5% NaCl.
Optimum growth temperature is 28 ºC. No growth at 39 ºC. Grows between pH 5.0
and 9.0. Aerobic.
Isolated from soil.

gentiobiose, gluconate, 2- and 5-ketogluconate, lactose, D-lyxose, melibiose, methyl alpha-D-mannopyranoside, methyl
