Gram-positive cells showing a rod-coccus cycle, 0.5-1.4 µm, easily decolorized.
Non-motile. Non-acid-fast. Non-spore-forming.
Colonies on trypticase soy agar without dextrose are yellow; degree of pigmentation
varies with growth temperature and age of the cells. Growth occurs at 0-30 ºC. Grows
in the presence of 5% (w/v) NaCl. The pH range for growth is 5.7-9.1. Obligately
aerobic. No vitamin requirements; grows in mineral salts medium with ammonium
chloride as sole source of nitrogen.
Isolated from whey-enriched farm soil.

Can utilize as sole carbon sources lactose, sorbitol, melibiose, cellobiose, glycerol, maltose, raffinose, xylose, galactose,
sucrose, D-glucose, D-mannose, D-mannitol, N-acetylglucosamine, maltose, malic acid and trisodium citrate.


Negative results for alkaline phosphatase (positive in Margesin's study), arginine dihydrolase, DNase, indole production, H
2S
production, lipase (C14), nitrate reduction, N-acetyl-betaglucosaminidase, lysine decarboxylase, ornithine decarboxylase,oxidase
,
urease, acid production, from amygdalin, L-arabinose, D-glucose, inositol, D-mannitol, L-rhamnose, melibiose, D-sorbitol, and
sucrose.
No utilization of alpha-cyclodextrin, L-arabinose, L-fucose, methyl alpha-D-galactoside,  stachyose, L-asparagine, uridine, Tween 40
and 80, capric acid and adipic acid.
