Gram-positive cocci. Nonmotile. Endospores are not formed.
Colonies on ISP 2 are circular, convex, smooth and pinkish orange after 3 days of
incubation at 28 ºC. The growth temperature range is 4-40 ºC (optimum at 25-28 ºC).
Growth occurs at pH 6-10 (optimum at pH 7-8), and in the presence of 0-7% (w/v) NaCl
(optimum 3%). Aerobic.
Isolated from deep-sea hydrothermal plume water collected at theSouthwest Indian Ridge at a depth of 2800 m.

Can utilize as sole carbon source L-arabinose, cellobiose, D-fructose, D-galactose, glucose, alpha-lactose, maltose, mannitol,
mannose, raffinose, L-rhamnose, sucrose and D-xylose.

Negative results for adenine hydrolysis, casein hydrolysis, guanine hydrolysis, hypoxanthine hydrolysis, H2S production, indole
production, methyl red test, oxidase, Tweens 20, 40 and 80 hydrolysis, Voges-Proskauer test, xanthine hydrolysis
No utilization of erythritol or ribose.

Variable results for gelatin liquefaction, milk peptonization, nitrate reduction, starch hydrolysis and urease.
