Phylum Pseudomonadota (Proteobacteria), Class Gammaproteobacteria, Order Pseudomonadales, Family Moraxellaceae, Genus
Moraxella, Moraxella bovoculi Angelos et al. 2007.
Gram-negative diplococci with occasional cocci shape; the cell diameters are 0.7–1.3
μm, Nonmotile.
Colonies are under 1 mm diameter, white to off-white, circular and convex with an
entire margin and a moist-looking surface. Most strains are beta-hemolytic on 5%
sheep blood agar.
Optimum temperature for growth 35-37 ºC. Can grow at 25 and 42 ºC (variable).
Growth does not occur on MacConkey agar, Salmonella-Shigella agar, Simmons’
citrate agar, sodium acetate agar or nutrient agar with 6% NaCl.
Isolated from eyes of dairy and beef calves affected with infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis.
Causes infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis.

Positive results for catalase, leucine arylamidase (most strains), lipase, nitrates reduction, oxidase, hydrolysis of Tween 80 (4 days),
phenylalanine deaminase, C4 esterase (hydrolysis of 2-naphthyl butyrate) and C8 esterase lipase.
Negative results for acid phosphatase, alkaline phosphatase, arginine dihydrolase, litmus milk reaction, H2S production, indole
production from tryptophan, urease, ornithine decarboxylase, sugar fermentation (glucose, xylose, mannitol, lactose, fructose,
maltose and sucrose), aesculin hydrolysis, gelatin hydrolysis, beta-galactosidase, alpha-galactosidase, beta-galactosidase,
beta-glucuronidase, alpha-glucosidase, beta-glucosidase, N-acetyl-beta-glucosaminidase, alpha-mannosidase, alpha-fucosidase,
assimilation of: glucose, arabinose, mannose, mannitol, N-acetylglucosamine, maltose, potassium gluconate, caproic acid, adipic
acid, malic acid, trisodium citrate and phenylacetic acid.
Variable results for DNase and proteolysis on Loffler medium.
