Gram-negative, small, regular rods, 0.3-0.5 x 2.0-3.0 µm, with occasional coccoid
forms. Non-motile.
Colonies on chocolate agar are convex, whitish, opaque, 0.5–1.5 mm in diameter after
24 h. Beta-haemolysis is produced  on horse or sheep blood agar; occasional strains
are non-haemolytic and consequently fail to grow on blood agar in the absence of a
feeder strain. Growth is dependent on V factor. Haemin (X factor) is not required.
Facultatively anaerobic.
Isolated from blood, sputum of patients with cystic fibrosis, and tooth alveolitis.
Opportunistic pathogen.

Positive results for beta-galactosidase, urease, leucine arylamidase, oxidase, acid production from: D-glucose, fructose, D-maltose
and maltotriose.

Negative results for arginine dihydrolase, H
2S production (or weakly positive on lead acetate), indole production, lysine decarboxylase,
ornithine decarboxylase, phenylalanine arylamidase, acid production from: N-acetyl-D-glucosamine, lactose, D-mannose, D-malate,
D-ribose and D-xylose.

Variable results for catalase, acid production from D-galactose.
