Phylum Pseudomonadota (Proteobacteria), Class Gammaproteobacteria, Order Pseudomonadales, Family Pseudomonadaceae,
Genus Azomonas, Azomonas agilis (Beijerinck 1901) Winogradsky 1938, type species of the genus.
Basonym: Azotobacter agilis Beijerinck 1901.
Gram-negative or Gram-variable, ellipsoidal- to rod-shaped cells depending on age,
2.0 x 2.5-3.5 µm, occuring singly, in pairs, or in clumps. Motile by lophotrichous
flagella that tend to bind together to form thick, whip-like structures. Cysts are not
formed.
Colonies are 2-6 mm in diameter (after several days incubation at 30 ºC), oopaque,
low convex, butyrous, and usually mucoid. glistening, and smooth. Produce a
yellow-green visible, blue-white fluorescent pigment (azoverdin) when grown in
iron-deficient medium. Azoverdin is produced in Fe-limited cultures grown at 28 ºC but
not at 34 ºC. Optimum temperature for growth is approximately 30-37 ºC; minimum 14
ºC. Variable growth at 9 ºC. Grows aerobically and microaerobically.

Positive results for catalase and oxidase.
Can utilize: fructose, glucose, sucrose, acetate, pyruvate, fumarate, malate, succinate, alpha-oxoglutarate, lactate, DL-gluconate,
acetyl methyl carbinol, trehalose, caproate, malonate, mucate, benzoate, catechol, 4-hydroxybenzoate, naphthalene, protocatechuate,
and 4-toluate.
Negative results for urease activity.
No utilization of: D-galactose, sorbitol, raffinose, glutarate, benzoate, melezitose and mannitol.
Variable utilization of maltose.
