Phylum Pseudomonadota (Proteobacteria), Class Gammaproteobacteria, Order Pseudomonadales, Family Pseudomonadaceae,
Genus Pseudomonas, Pseudomonas marginalis (Brown 1918) Stevens 1925.
Synonyms: Bacterium marginale Brown 1918, Pseudomonas panacis Park et al. 2005.
Strains of P. marginalis species have been included in biovar II of P. fluorescens.
Gram negative rods, motile by means of one or more flagella. Spores are not formed.
Colonies on nutritive agar are flat, translucent, butyraceous, beige-coloured with
entire margins and usually 2-3 mm in diameter within 2 days at 30 ºC. Produces
fluorescent pigment on King’s B medium.
Aerobic. Very poor growth detected under anaerobic conditions. Grows between 4 and
35 ºC, but not at 37 ºC. Tolerates NaCl up to 5% on nutritive agar.
P. panacis was isolated from the surface tissue of a rusty root lesion of Korean ginseng (Panax ginseng).
P. marginalis was isolated from lettuce and other plants.
Pathogenic on lettuce and related plants.

Positive results for acid and alkaline phosphatase, arginine dihydrolase, cystine arylamidase, catalase, esculin hydrolysis, esterase
(C4), esterase lipase (C8), gelatin hydrolysis (negative P. marginalis), leucine arylamidase, nitrate reduction to nitrite, oxidase, trypsin
and valine arylamidase.
Produce acid from D-glucose, D-sucrose, D-melibiose and D-arabinose.
Can utilize as sole carbon and energy sources: tartrate, glucose, arabinose, mannose, mannitol, N-acetylglucosamine, gluconate,
caprate, malate, malonate, citrate, sucrose (negative P. marginalis) myo-inositol, D-fructose, alpha-D-glucose, D-trehalose,
methylpyruvate, cis-aconitic acid, citric acid, D-galactonic acid lactone, D-galacturonic acid, D-gluconic acid, beta-hydroxybutyric acid,
p-hydroxyphenylacetic acid, alpha-ketoglutaric acid, DL-lactic acid, propionic acid, D-saccharic acid, succinic acid, L-alanine, L-alanyl
glycine, L-asparagine, L-aspartic acid, L-glutamic acid, L-ornithine, L-proline, L-pyroglutamic acid, L-serine, DL-carnitine,

Negative results for urease, H2S, indole production, acetone production, lipase (C14), alpha-galactosidase, beta-galactosidase,
beta-glucuronidase, alpha-glucosidase, beta-glucosidase, N-acetyl-beta-glucosaminidase, alpha-mannosidase, alpha-fucosidase,
lysine decarboxylase, ornithine decarboxylase, tryptophan deaminase, acid production from D-mannitol, D-sorbitol, inositol and
amygdalin.
Does not utilize: 5-ketogluconate, raffinose, salicin, maltose, phenylacetate, alpha-cyclodextrin, dextrin, glycogen,
N-acetyl-D-galactosamine, cellobiose, L-fucose, gentiobiose, alpha-D-lactose, lactulose, D-melibiose, methyl beta-D-glucoside,
D-raffinose, L-rhamnose, turanose, formic acid, alpha-ketobutyric acid, alpha-ketovaleric acid, sebacic acid, glucuronamide,
glycyl-L-aspartic acid, hydroxy L-proline, L-phenylalanine, D-serine, thymidine, phenylethylamine, putrescine, 2,3-butanediol, glucose
1-phosphate and glucose 6-phosphate.
