Gram-negative rods with a single polar flagellum, 0.5 by 1-4 μm.
Accumulate poli-beta-hydroxybutyrate.
Yellow / orange colonies (non fluorescent, non diffusible, carotenoid pigment
(intracellular)).
Obligately aerobic, optimum temperature 26-30 ºC (no growth at 4 or 41 ºC). Can
grow on Nutrient agar and Nutrient broth.
First isolated from the seminal vesicle of Hirudo medicinalis (medicinal leech). Other isolates from water, soil, slime deposits in
paper mills, rarely clinical human specimens.
Unknown. Few reports of bacteremia in immunocompromised patients.

Can oxidize isopropanol to acetone.
Positive results for alpha-glucosidase, esculin hydrolysis, alkaline and acid phosphates, ester lipase (C8), leucine arylamidase,
phosphoamidase, trypsin and oxidase.
Can utilize for growth: glucose, galactose, maltose, cellobiose, acetate, butyrate, succinate, L-malate, D&L-alanine, L-aspartate and
DL-beta-hydroxybutyrate.
Negative results for arginine dihydrolase, chymotrypsin, nitrates and nitrites reduction, gelatin liquefication, indole formation, urease,
lysine and ornithine decarboxylases, phenylalanine deaminase, lecithinase(egg yolk), and lipase (Tween 80), lipase (C14), cystine
arylamidase, alpha-fucosidase, alpha- and beta-galactosidase, beta-glucosidase, N-acetyl beta-glucosidase, alpha-mannosidase.
Cannot utilize: D-malate, tyrosine, L-valine, n-valerate, fructose, gluconate, lactose, trehalose, xylose, L-histidine, pantothenate,
glycerol, erythritol, D- and L-arabinose, D-ribose, D- and L-xylose, adonitol, methyl-P-xyloside, D-fructose, D-mannose, L-sorbose,
dulcitol, inositol, mannitol, sorbitol, methyl-alpha-D-mannoside, methyl-alpha-D-glucose, N-acetylglucosamine, amygdalin, arbutin,
