Phylum Bacillota (Firmicutes), Class Bacilli, Order Bacillales, Family Staphylococcaceae, Genus Staphylococcus, Staphylococcus
caprae Devriese et al. 1983.
Gram-positive cocci, 0.8-1.2 μm, nonmotile, nonsporing. Form pairs, chains and
clusters.
Colonies nonpigmented, slightly convex, opaque, and glistening, 5-8 mm diameter.
Hemolytic (delayed reaction). Facultatively anaerobic, 25-45 ºC, 37 ºC optimum.
Growth is much slower at 25 ºC. Grow on media: Nutrient agar or nutrient broth,
Trypticase Soy Agar ± 5% sheep blood, Mueller Hinton agar, Chapman (selective
medium with 75 g/l de NaCl & mannitol).
Isolated rarely, from humans and animals (goats' milk and skin). Susceptible to Novobiocin.
May produce mastitis in small ruminants, rarely nosocomial infections in humans (bone and joint sepsis or bacteremia,
endocarditis, urinary tract infections, otitis externa); neonatal bacteremia .
