Phylum Bacillota (Firmicutes), Class Bacilli, Order Bacillales, Family Staphylococcaceae, Genus Macrococcus, Macrococcus
equipercicus Kloos et al. 1998. Old synonym: Staphylococcus equipercicus Ballard et al. 1995, type species of the genus.
Gram-positive cocci, 1.4-2.5 μm in diameter, occuring singly or grouped in pairs or
tetrads. Non- motile. Non-spore-forming.
Colonies are slightly convex, entire, butyrous, glistening, opaque, 5-7 mm in diameter,
pale yellow to medium orange. No hemolysis. Aerobic, no growth anaerobically.
Optimum temperature 35 ºC. Grow in 7.5% NaCl concentration. Grows on media:
Trypticase Soy Agar ± 5% sheep blood, BHI agar, P agar.
Isolated from horses and ponies' skin. The type strain was isolated from the skin of an Irish thoroughbred horse. Resistant to
novobiocin. Susceptible to lysostaphin.
Not determined. Horse skin inhabitant.

Positive results for oxidase, catalase, DN-ase, beta-glucosidase, acid production
from: mannitol, lactose, D-fructose and glycerol.
Negative results for acetoin production, nitrates reduction, beta-glucosidase, pyrrolidonylarylamidase, alkaline phosphatase,
ornithine-decarboxylase, beta-glucuronidase, beta-galactosidase, acid production from: mannose, D-ribose, sucrose, raffinose,
xylose, arabinose, cellobiose, salicin, melezitose and turanose.
Variable results for esculin hydrolysis, urease, acid production from: trehalose and maltose.
